Why do we eat some animals and not others? What is it that makes us see some species as friends and others as food?
These are the questions that acclaimed Harvard psychology scholar Dr Melanie Joy set out to answer when she embarked on two decades of research, and she’s sharing her results in Australia.
Dr Joy’s extensive studies into the psychology of food led her to coin the term ‘carnism’ – the invisible belief system that makes us feel uncomfortable about eating some animals but not others.
“Pulling back the curtain on carnism can help us all become more empowered citizens and more active social witnesses, whatever our dietary choices may be,” she says.
Dr Joy’s presentation, ‘Beyond Carnism and Toward Rational, Authentic Food Choices’ is among the most-watched TEDx talks. She has published an award-winning book titled Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows.
