My Journey with Chronic Prostatitis: From Decades of Pain to Finding Hope
I am 57 years old, and I developed chronic prostatitis in my early twenties. It began with a urinary tract infection that eventually developed into prostatitis.
This has been a very long and difficult journey, and anyone who has experienced prostatitis knows just how debilitating it can be. Like many men, I suffered in silence. What started as an acute condition gradually became chronic.
For years, I followed the standard medical approach, taking repeated courses of antibiotics. Unfortunately, they had little lasting effect.
I eventually developed chronic bacterial prostatitis, and the symptoms were extremely difficult to live with. They included burning pain during urination, frequent and urgent urination, pain in my testicles, urethra, perineum, and groin, and, at times, pain during ejaculation.
As a man, this condition affects far more than your body. It takes a significant toll on your mental wellbeing. It can lead to mood swings, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and strain on relationships. Many times over the years I thought I had finally beaten it, only for it to flare up again without warning.
Through this long journey, I have gained extensive knowledge about managing prostatitis and supporting men with prostate health issues.
How It All Began
To understand why this condition became so chronic for me, I have to go back to when I was 11 years old.
I was hit by a motorbike while crossing the road and suffered severe internal injuries. Doctors gave me only 24 hours to live, and at one point my heart stopped briefly.
Thankfully, they saved all of my organs except my spleen.
For the next ten years, I was prescribed penicillin twice a day. The spleen plays an important role in filtering blood and supporting the immune system, particularly in fighting certain bacterial infections.
Looking back, I believe that losing my spleen, combined with years of heavy antibiotic use, significantly affected both my immune system and my gut health.
The Link Between Prostatitis and IBS
Alongside prostatitis, I also struggled with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) for many years.
Personally, I believe my IBS developed after years of antibiotic use disrupted my gut microbiome. As I researched these conditions, I discovered that many men with chronic prostatitis also experience IBS.
Although the relationship is complex, the bowel and bladder share muscles, nerves, and close anatomical connections. Constipation and bowel dysfunction can sometimes place pressure on the bladder and prostate, potentially contributing to urinary symptoms.
Living with Chronic Pain
Throughout my twenties and thirties, every flare-up sent me back to specialists for more testing.
Time after time, no infection could be found, yet I was repeatedly prescribed more antibiotics.
Eventually, I became extremely disillusioned—not only with the condition itself but with life.
It affected my relationships, my confidence, my decision-making, and almost every part of my daily life.
Unfortunately, I coped in unhealthy ways.
I regularly binge-drank alcohol to escape what I was experiencing. Most people around me had no idea what I was dealing with. They simply assumed I enjoyed drinking heavily.
Deep down, I always knew alcohol wasn’t helping. In fact, it made things much worse. There were times I became so intoxicated that I couldn’t function. I suffered falls, fractured both wrists on separate occasions, and experienced blackouts where I couldn’t remember what had happened.
Looking back, I realise I wasn’t drinking because I wanted to—I was trying to numb physical pain and emotional distress.
If you know someone who drinks excessively, it’s worth remembering that they may be struggling with something much deeper than what’s visible on the surface.
Searching for Answers
Over the years, I tried almost everything.
I explored herbal remedies, hot sitz baths, dietary changes, and many alternative approaches I discovered through books and online research.
Around fifteen years ago, I underwent food sensitivity testing and was advised to eliminate wheat, dairy, and yeast.
After making those changes, I noticed significant improvements in both my IBS and prostatitis symptoms. Although flare-ups still occurred, they became less frequent.
The Biggest Turning Point
Twelve years ago, I stopped drinking alcohol completely.
Around the same time, I also adopted a 100% whole-food, plant-based diet.
For me, this was the biggest turning point.
I eliminated all animal products and focused on eating whole plant foods, including plenty of fruit and vegetables. During this period, I also completed several extended juice fasts and other dietary protocols aimed at improving my gut health.
Shortly before making these lifestyle changes, my PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test had risen significantly. Elevated PSA levels can occur with prostatitis, although they can also indicate other prostate conditions and should always be assessed by a doctor.
Within six months of changing my lifestyle, my PSA had returned to a healthy range, where it has remained for more than twelve years.
While I can’t say that these changes will work for everyone, they transformed my own health.
Today, my prostatitis symptoms are minimal and easy to manage. My IBS has also improved dramatically.
Managing Flare-Ups Today
I still experience the occasional flare-up, particularly during periods of stress or if I eat highly processed, fried, or spicy foods.
However, these episodes are now infrequent and much easier to control. They no longer have a significant impact on my quality of life.
Why Pilates Became Part of My Recovery
Alongside improving my nutrition and giving up alcohol, maintaining an active lifestyle has played an important role in my wellbeing.
For the past ten years, I have worked as a Pilates instructor and personal trainer.
I am a huge advocate for Pilates. Originally known as Contrology, Pilates is about learning to take control of your body through strength, balance, breathing, and movement.
Personally, I believe it has helped me enormously by improving my core strength, pelvic floor function, posture, and overall wellbeing.
I have also found mindfulness practices such as meditation and breathwork incredibly valuable. In fact, I teach breathing techniques at the end of my Pilates classes because I’ve seen how much they can help people reduce stress and improve body awareness.
My Mission
Over the years, I have learned an enormous amount about prostatitis, gut health, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle.
I’m currently putting together a detailed PDF guide to share everything I’ve learned throughout my journey.
I also offer one-on-one coaching for men who want guidance and support while navigating prostatitis or other prostate health concerns.
My goal isn’t to replace medical advice. Rather, I want to share what has worked for me and help other men explore lifestyle strategies that may improve their quality of life alongside appropriate medical care.
Most importantly, I want men to start talking more openly about their health.
